Now believe it or not, but people actually think there is only two types of engines. The internal combustion engine with cylinders and the hybrid engine as seen in the Toyota Prius. One of the most unknown engines is the Rotary engine. The rotary engine was 1st used by NSU, a French company that made cars. Because the Rotary engine was a failure NSU went out of business and the rotary engine was left abandoned by time. But Mazda, bless them, has provided a future of the engine with the RX-7, and the RX8, but youd never expect to find one of these engines in a racing machine, right? Well, youre stupid (just kidding), meet the Mazda 787B, the most successful Japanese race machine. The twin wankel rotary powered engine (whats a wankel?) pushed out 791 hp, with a 5 speed manual gearbox. The car had a top speed of 201 mph, pretty good for an unproven engine. The car was the 1st Japanese car that won the 24 hours of LeMans, and that record still exists today. This is my favorite race machine.
